Global system for mobile communications

GSM is considered, due to its transmission speed and other characteristics, a second generation (2G) standard. Its extension to 3G is called UMTS and differs in its higher transmission speed, the use of a slightly different network architecture and especially in the use of different radio protocols (W-CDMA).
